5 Ways Social Gathering Can Boost Your Wellbeing

“This is the power of gathering: It Inspires us delightfully- to be more hopeful, more joyful, more thoughtful: In A Word, More Alive.” -Alice Waters

Humans are inherently social beings. Historically we have migrated, co-existed, and built thriving communities to not only benefit ourselves but the group as a whole. Social settings amongst like minds provide us with a sense of belonging and reassurance.

There is no doubt that post-pandemic has changed how we gather but has also highlighted the importance of social connection outside of Zoom calls, virtual happy hours, and drive-thru graduation parties.

During the height of the pandemic, we began to realize how much we had taken for granted from dinner parties with friends on a Friday night or just having drinks at our favorite local restaurant to having a light-hearted chat with the bartender.

Not only did we miss our interactions with our extended families we missed the micro-interactions with the flight attendant, restaurant server, or coffee barista. Although we did our best online to maintain and even build relationships, the online world is no comparison to in-person human interaction, as several studies have shown. The need to touch, hug and smile in close proximity are all social norms that promote a thriving community.

5 Ways Social Gathering Boost Your WellBeing

  1. Improve Your Health (Social interactions boost serotonin that boosts your mood, reduces stress, and provides a sense of security and belonging)

  2. Increase Happiness (This depends on the company you keep. Surrounding yourself with positive-minded people lowers your chances of depression and anxiety)

  3. Boost Mental Health (Belonging and purpose are the two pillars of gathering. Gathering with people who see, hear, and accept you fosters the belief that you are valued and valuable in turn this can boost your own self-perspective and confidence.

  4. Live Fuller (Studies show having a group of friends and a community you belong to can increase your longevity. Sharing meals with people, talking honestly, and making time for in-person connection is a huge part of life in Blue Zone areas, where some of the happiest people on earth reside.

  5. Make Friends But Keep the Old (Making new friends alone can boost your happiness by 15%. The world’s longest-living humans have close friends and strong social networks.)
